Color cartridge not compatible?

so i bought a new hp c4280 printer and when i set it up i get the message on the little lcd screen %26quot;print cartidge(s) missing/not detected.%26quot; usually i can print one thing but if i try to print something else it will give me that message. does anyone know what this problem is? i used the printer cartridges that came with the printer.|||Assuming the cartridges are installed correctly I%26#039;d say that either the cartridges or the printer is defective. I%26#039;d try to get a refund or exchange just in case.
